The Abandoned Quarries site exists to educate our communities about the hidden dangers of abandoned quarries and mines. What may look like a beautiful place to explore can conceal hazards that are impossible to see from the surface. Cold, deep quarry water can be deadly, even for strong swimmers. Abandoned, water-filled mines and quarries have claimed countless lives in the U.S. and around the world.
Never swim, dive, cliff-jump, hike along unstable quarry edges, or operate off-road vehicles around abandoned quarries. Every year, lives are lost to drownings, falls, and other preventable accidents caused by a lack of awareness.

What is a Quarry?
A quarry is a mining site where stone, sand, gravel, slate, limestone, granite, or another material was excavated. At an abandoned quarry, operations have permanently stopped and it is no longer regulated or maintained and the environment becomes dangerous.
Deceiving Waters
A quarry can look a calm and spectacular while still being extremely hazardous. They often fill with rainwater or groundwater, creating deep, attractive-looking pools. Even when the water looks clear and calm, an abandoned quarry is not a safe swimming hole. It can be hiding serious dangers below the surface. What looks like peaceful swimming holes below can become dangerous in seconds.
The United States has hundreds of thousands of abandoned mine sites and features—possibly more than 700,000—while millions exist worldwide.
